Airway & Sleep
Airway & Sleep
Your ability to breathe comfortably and achieve restorative sleep depends on more than your airway alone. Structural restrictions, dysfunctional breathing patterns and physiological imbalances can all influence sleep quality and overall health. These factors may contribute to snoring, sleep-disordered breathing, frequent nighttime awakenings, difficulty falling or staying asleep and daytime fatigue.
At One 2 One Physical Therapy, we take a whole-body, airway-focused approach to identifying functional factors that may contribute to breathing difficulties and disrupted sleep. Our evaluation examines the relationship between your airway, jaw and tongue function, head and neck position, spinal alignment, rib cage mechanics and pelvic position. We assess patterns such as habitual mouth breathing, restricted nasal breathing, low tongue posture, forward head posture and reduced rib cage expansion that may affect breathing efficiency and airway function.
Our treatment approach incorporates Postural Restoration (PRI), breathing restoration, orofacial myofunctional therapy and manual therapy to improve breathing mechanics, optimize postural alignment and reduce unnecessary muscular tension. We also recognize that sleep difficulties may be influenced by physiological factors, including nutritional imbalances and other aspects of your overall health. When appropriate, we discuss supportive lifestyle and nutritional considerations.
We work closely with airway-focused dentists on treatment approaches that address structural and functional contributors to airway dysfunction. This includes skeletal expansion procedures such as miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE), which can help improve nasal breathing, expand the palate and support healthier occlusal relationships, as well as oral appliance therapy for appropriate patients. Our physical therapy complements these dental interventions by addressing breathing mechanics, neuromuscular function and postural adaptations to support more efficient breathing and overall treatment outcomes.
By addressing the interconnected structural, functional and physiological factors that influence breathing and sleep, our goal is to help you breathe more efficiently, sleep more restoratively and improve your overall health and quality of life.
